I just saw the obituary in the LA Times for Glen GoodKnight, who founded the Mythopoeic Society.

"In 1967, he was a history major at Cal State L.A. when he organized a lighthearted picnic in Highland Park as a tribute to Bilbo and Frodo, two central characters in J.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings.""

I'm pretty sure I went to that picnic with my parents. I remember bringing a gift to exchange as a mathom, and I don't remember what I brought but I got a scarf woven in shades of brown that I kept for many years. Although I was never a big Tolkien fan, I went to one or two Mythcons. Now I know a lot of people who are involved in the Society.
