For the July 4th weekend I went to LA to visit my mom, whose 84th birthday was the 2nd. We had a nice visit, mostly hanging out and watching Dodgers games. of course I went to thrift stores, antique stores, museums, and book stores, and here's what I got (including two BookMooch books that were waiting for me when I got home):
  • Claws of the Thunderbird, Holling C. Holling. A 1928 book by one of my favorite children's book authors and illustrators. I've never read this one and this copy isn't in great shape, but I was happy to find it.
  • The Principles of Uncertainty, Maira Kalman. From Bart's Books, crazy open air bookstore in Ojai.
  • Under The Story Tree, Mabel Gunnip LaRue, 1926. Another children's book with great illustrations, a bit damaged.
  • The New Wonder World - Volume IX, The Child in the Home. 1947 illustrated children's book
  • 1948 New Yorker, 1943 Life ("Special Issue: USSR"), a bunch of 1944, 1946, and 1947 National Geographics. I picked up the latter because they have ads for the Parker "51" just like the one I recently bought and I always enjoy reading them.
  • All the Art That's Fit to Print (And Some That Wasn't): Inside The New York Times Op-Ed Page, Jerelle Kraus
  • Hiroshige, Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler. I went to a big exhibit of his prints at the Norton Simon & this was on sale.
  • The Beautiful Visit, Elizabeth Jane Howard. Novelist I like a lot.
  • Going Gray, Looking Great! The Modern Woman's Guide to Unfading Glory, Diana Lewis Jewell
